System Shock: Enhanced Edition is Now Available on

You read that right.  Finally, Good Ol’ Games has released the updated version of the original sci-fi masterpiece, System Shock for purchase from their site.  Though at the time of its release the game fell short in sales due to the confounding control scheme (and most who did purchase the game could barely make their way through it), it has become a pantheon of its medium, often cited as one of the most influential PC games of all time.

Now thanks to GOG, consumers are welcome to explore this important historical achievement with “game-changing improvements, including mouselook, widescreen, and a high resolution display mode,” as stated by Stephen Kick, the CEO of Night Dive Studios (the company responsible for the refined version made available).  These improvements aim to give the antiquated gameplay a much more modern impression, in effort to allow for a much less convoluted system of mechanics.

It’s a beautiful thing to witness the reinvention of such an important classic, and hopefully it will encourage younger audiences, or even older audiences who couldn’t bear the original game’s intricacies, to experience it.

I got System Shock the second I read about it on GOG. I always wanted to play it because System Shock 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and so far I have to admit that the game has a bit of a learning curve, but is still exhilarating nonetheless.
