January’s Free PS Plus Games Include Grim Fandango

The selection of games offered for free to PlayStation Plus members this month will, at the very least, allow subscribers to see how some old games have held up over time. The collection includes the remastered version of Grim Fandango for Vita and PS4, while the PS3 gets Dragon Age: Origins and Medal of Honor Warfighter.  Other games that can be downloaded for free include Hardware: Rivals, Legends of War Patton, and Nihilumbra.

Here is the breakdown for each system:

Playstation 4

  • Grim Fandango Remastered
  • Hardware: Rivals

PlayStation 3

  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • Medal of Honor Warfighter

PlayStation Vita

  • Grim Fandango Remastered
  • Legends of War Patton
  • Nihilumbra

If you have never played Grim Fandango, its a comedic point-and-click game with a film noir aesthetic, set in a purgatorial travel agency. Critics adored the game upon its release, and it’ll be interesting to see how the game holds up after nearly 20 years.

As for Hardware: Rivals, its a multiplayer vehicular combat game that was only just recently released for the PS4 and could offer some fun matches for those who download it. On the other hand, Legends of War Patton is a less than stellar turn-based strategy game that will only appeal to the most desperate fans of the genre.

For those who own a Vita, give Nihilumbra a shot. It’s a simple but elegantly designed platformer that allows players to paint the game’s environment, which in turn will change how surfaces react to objects as well as to the player’s character.

Finally, there is Dragon Age: Origins and Medal of Honor Warfighter. Released in 2009, Origins was a great game at the time but perhaps hasn’t translated so smoothly to 2016. As for Medal of Honor, even at its initial release it was a poor clone of Call of Duty, but may be worth your time if you can convince some friends to play alongside you.

So there you are, January’s free games for PS Plus members. It isn’t close to the best ever offering from Sony, but there is potential for you to discover a hidden gem or two.
